Trump approves firing-squad execution of US Army psychiatrist who k!lled 13

US President Donald Trump has approved the execution by firing squad of Nidal Hasan, the former US Army psychiatrist convicted of k!lling 13 people during a 2009 attack at Fort Hood in Texas.

The execution will be the first carried out by the US military since 1961, following the approval by Trump after Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the punishment.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced the decision in a post on X, saying Hegseth had recommended and Trump had approved death by US Army firing squad for Hasan. He added that the Secretary of the Army would determine the time and location of the execution.

Hasan was sentenced to death by a military jury in 2013 for the November 5, 2009, attack, which also left more than two dozen people wounded.

The shooting took place at a medical facility at the sprawling Fort Hood military base, where soldiers were preparing for deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Twelve of those who died and 30 of the wounded were soldiers.

Hasan, a US-born Muslim of Palestinian descent, was shot and partially paralysed by a civilian police officer who responded to the attack.

During his court-martial, Hasan represented himself but called no witnesses, gave no testimony and did not contest the charges. His court-appointed defence attorneys had expressed concerns that he was seeking the death penalty.

Hasan had opposed the US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and had communicated online with Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born radical cleric linked to al-Qaeda who was later killed in a US drone strike in Yemen.
